Saxophonist, composer and arranger Cochemea Gastelum comes to Salon as part of the 36th Akbank Jazz Festival.
Over a career spanning more than 25 years, Cochemea has carved out a singular sound, bringing jazz into conversation with funk, soul, Afro-Latin rhythms and spiritual music. Alongside his long-standing work with Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings, he has collaborated with a wide-ranging roster of artists, including Kevin Morby, Jon Batiste, Amy Winehouse, The Roots, Archie Shepp, Mark Ronson, Quincy Jones and Run The Jewels. His latest album on Daptone Records, Vol. 3: Ancestros Futuros, completes the trilogy he began in 2019. The album brings the free spirit of spiritual jazz together with Afro-Caribbean rhythms, funk, psychedelic textures and the musical heritage of Latin America, approaching memory not as a linear timeline but as a living narrative. Drawing on the past while always looking ahead, Cochemea has created a sound world entirely his own.
From the hypnotic pulse of Afrobeat and the warmth of Latin percussion to the drive of funk and the improvisational freedom of jazz: a live experience that is at once spiritual and visceral, taking on a new shape with every performance.
