The Book Club sessions of the 30th Istanbul Theatre Festival’s free Festival Plus programme delve into the literary sources behind adaptations staged at the festival. Each session explores a novel that has been adapted for the stage. This session focuses on Elizabeth Costello by Nobel Prize-winning author J. M. Coetzee.
Writer, editor and translator Eylül Görmüş, a contributor to KAFA magazine and K24 and host of the programmes Pandora’nın Merakı and Nereden Başlamalı, leads the session.
Nobel Prize-winning author J. M. Coetzee’s Elizabeth Costello provides the starting point for the play of the same name, adapted for the stage by Saim Güveloğlu for the 30th Istanbul Theatre Festival. The session focuses on questions at the heart of Coetzee’s narrative, including the relationship between humans and other living beings, moral responsibility, faith and the power of literature to generate thought. It also opens up a discussion on how a text can lend itself to different readings.
The event is free, but reservations are required. You can reserve your place here.
The Book Club will be held in Turkish.
Participants are expected to have read the novel and seen the play.
