Multi-instrumentalist and composer who places two seemingly disparate instruments, the bağlama and saxophone, at the heart of his musical identity.

Arda Umurhan sees tradition not as a sheltered space, but as a starting point for exploring new sounds. On the bağlama, he combines the traditional plectrum technique with the rhythmic, multilayered şelpe technique, which gives the instrument an almost percussive quality. He also brings the saxophone’s entirely different expressive possibilities into his compositional world. On his debut single ‘full.space’, he let the bağlama stand alone, building the track’s entire sonic world with a single instrument. He is now preparing to bring the world of his debut album, due for release in November and featuring entirely his own compositions, to the Salon stage.

On one side, strings, plectrum and percussive finger strikes; on the other, breath, keys and the expanding sound of the saxophone.
